MPLAB ICE 2000 Parallel Port Access Driver
First Time Installation

For Windows XP

Before You Begin
Determine your method of communication between the emulator and the PC.

A. Parallel port communcation - Follow the instructions listed here.

B. USB communication - Requires additional USB converter hardware. Follow the directions listed in: C:\Program Files\Microchip\MPLAB IDE\ICE 2000\Drivers\USB\ddice2k.htm.

STEP 1
Open the Control Panel using either method A or B.

A. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. This will open a folder in which you will find the "Control Panel" icon. Double-click on the "Control Panel" icon. 

B. Click "Start" on the system menu at the bottom of the screen. Then select "Settings", followed by "Control Panel". 

Double-click on the "Add Hardware" icon found inside the Control Panel.

The first dialog of the "Add Hardware" wizard will open. Click "Next".

STEP 2
The wizard will search for new hardware. 
STEP 3
In the "Is the hardware connected?" dialog, select "Yes,..." Click "Next". 
STEP 4
In the "The following hardware..." dialog, scroll down in the "Installed Hardware" list to find "Add a new hardware device". Click on this item to select it. Click "Next". 
STEP 5
In the "The wizard can help..."dialog, select "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)". Click "Next". 
STEP 6
You will now be ask to select the type of hardware you want to install. In the "Common Hardware Types" list, select "Show All Devices" by clicking on it. Click "Next". 
STEP 7
You will then be asked to specify where the needed device driver files are to be found. Click "Have Disk". 
STEP 8
In the "Install from Disk" dialog, use the Browse button to help you select the directory where the GPPIOW2K.SYS and GPPIOW2K.INF files are located, i.e.,

C:\Program Files\Microchip\MPLAB IDE\ICE 2000\Drivers.

Once the directory is selected, it will appear in the edit box labeled "Copy manufacturer's files from:". Click "OK". 

STEP 9
You should now see the following dialog box with the "Model" specified as  "Microchip MPLAB Parallel Port Access Driver". If this is not highlighted, click on it once to highlight it and then click "Next".
STEP 10
The wizard is ready to install your hardware, as stated in this dialog. Click "Next".
STEP 11
During the install, a dialog may pop up stating, "The software you are installing for this hardware: Microchip Development Tool has not passed Windows Logo testing..." In this case, Microchip Development Tool will be "Microchip MPLAB Parallel Port Access Driver". Click "Continue Anyway".
STEP 12
The wizard has finished installing your hardware, as stated in this dialog. Click "Finish" to close the wizard.
STEP 13
View the device manager to check that the driver was added. It should be located under "Microchip Tools".

Complete the installation by referring to the "MPLAB ICE 2000 Installation Instructions" (DS51489), "MPLAB ICE 2000 In-Circuit Emulator User's Guide" (DS51488) or MPLAB ICE 2000 on-line help file.
